Menstrual Cycle Skincare: Perfect Skin on Your Period

11th of July, 2024

The menstrual cycle is more than just your period. It is a chain of activities, usually lasting for an average of 28 days, involving the brain, the uterus and the ovaries. The first day of your period marks the first day of your cycle. The day before your next period is when the cycle resets. For some, the process can be as little as three weeks, and for others, as long as 45 days. The menstrual cycle is orchestrated by a delicate balance of key hormones within the body. As a result, the appearance of your skin can fluctuate as your hormones do. So, let’s first find out how you can manage your menstrual cycle skincare during your period.

Menstrual Cycle Skincare

Fluctuating hormones can have a significant effect on the appearance and the health of the skin. Hormone imbalances can manifest as frustrating, painful conditions, such as dryness or acne. Cycle syncing your skincare is a great way to give your skin exactly what it needs in each phase to maintain a glowing complexion. Menstrual cycle skincare is easiest for those who can identify recurring monthly patterns in their skin concerns, indicating hormonal effects. However, if you have consistent skin concerns, it is best to maintain a consistent routine to achieve the best results.

Menstruation Phase

Menstruation is your period and signals the start of the menstrual cycle. During this time, hormone levels are at their lowest, as oestrogen and progesterone levels drop off at the end of your previous cycle. With low hormone levels and no fertilised egg, your body receives the signal to break down the top layers of the uterine lining. The menstruation phase can last between 2 and 8 days, with an average of around 5 days for lots of women.

Your Period & Your Skin

A lack of oestrogen during your period can cause the skin to appear dull and tired, as oestrogen is linked to the production of collagen and hyaluronic acid. Both of these components are key for plump, glowing skin. You may notice increased dryness, irritation and sensitivity within this stage of the cycle too, as a lack of collagen weakens the skin barrier. Acne is common for many during menstruation, as low hormone levels contribute to increased sebum build up, causing clogged pores. However, it is not all doom and gloom. There are things you can do during this phase to master your menstrual cycle skincare and achieve healthy skin.

Menstrual Cycle Skincare: The Period

During your period, it is best to increase hydration from the inside and out. Ensure you are using a thick, nourishing moisturiser and drinking around 2 litres of water daily. Incorporate oils and masks into your routine at this stage to ensure maximum moisture. Avoid harsh active ingredients and exfoliation during the menstruation phase while the skin barrier is weaker than usual. Boost your complexion and your confidence during menstruation
